Top tips for driving in France

  1. Police will issue on the spot fines for a variety of offences. It’s not unknown for drivers to be escorted to cash machines in order to pay. Have some cash in case
  2. Toll roads are excellent if you don’t mind paying. B roads are still good and more picturesque, although much slower. The cost of tolls from Calais to Toulouse will be in the region of 40 euros
  3. Services can get extremely crowded during lunch time. Good idea to take your own lunch and stop at one of the garden areas, plenty of space with good restroom facilities.
  4. At motorway services, the petrol tends to be before the services
  5. Have a spare set of bulbs – this is compulsory.
  6. Drink drive laws are even tougher in France than in Britain. Wherever you are, if you are driving, DON’T DRINK
  7. A car coming in the opposite direction that flashes their lights can indicate a police speed trap ahead
  8. Carry all your driving documents with you – license, MOT, insurance certificates.
